“Someday”

Ray Bub

for Will Schendel

Someday we’ll all be together I swear
In that weekend lodge in the sky.

We’ll sit and drink beer
Having spent all day tracking the bull moose.

Nights long talking of long-ago earth,
How far we came,
How lonely we were.

We own all the cars and toasters we want now
And everyone’s filled with wonder.

God was our name then for all that we wanted—
How silly we were to believe we were haunted
By punishment, glory, fire and reward;
Everyone’s happy with free room and board!

Each tear I cried is a jewel on my gun butt,
Each moose I shoot springs up unhurt.
God how we longed for happiness,
And the harder we longed,
The better forever is!
