I often review and re-imagine sculptural ideas I have addressed in previous Teapot compositions, and with this Teapot I was thinking of my earlier “Grasshopper Leaping Reassembled Hollow Ring Teapot,” which has five arc segments bonded together to make two “see-throughs.” Here I made a triangular cross-section ring with long flaring “fins” on two points of the triangle. I tied the two largest arc segments together at both ends, making an elongated oval “see-through” in the middle of the assembly, and added the other two arc segments above these arcs. I then composed a flared lid finial reminiscent of the head feathers of the great blue heron, placed the spout where the heron’s beak would be, and glazed the completed Teapot in the blue-gray colors of this large wading bird. I think the completed Teapot exhibits the same slow, stately movements of this wonderful wild fish-eating summer visitor to our rural Vermont ponds and streams
